Possible treatments: quenching/tempering, brazing, annealing.
Advantages: localized treatment, good repeatability, localized deformations.
Possible treatments: quenching/tempering, aging, annealing, solution heat treatment.
Advantages: cleanliness of parts, limited deformation, treatment of a large number of alloyed steels, limited reworking during machining, recommended for aeronautical/medical/precision parts.
Low pressure treatment:
Possible treatments: carburizing, carbonitriding, annealing, solution treatment.
Advantages: appearance of the parts (no scale), reduction of the carbon footprint, low rework in machining, possibility of optimizing the deformation thanks to the adjustment of the cooling parameters.
Possible treatments: oil quenching/tempering, carbonitriding, carburizing, annealing.
Advantages: no decarburization, reliability, diversity of atmosphere TTHs, treating parts with low hardenability.
Possible treatments: plasma nitriding, max depth 0.3 mm. Advantages: very little deformation, possible protection, treatment on finished parts, treatment at low temperature, treatment on stainless steels.
First layer of surface is doped with carbon and nitrogen in order to improve surface mechanical properties. The process is similar to carburizing but for steel with more than 0.3% of carbon content inside.
It is required for some steel grades to cool down to sub-zero degree Celsius between quenching and tempering in order to achieve a better rate of structure transformation.
